Prior to approval of a landfill site, specified geologic and hydrogeological conditions must be met. A detailed hydrogeological evaluation of the Hillside Landfill has determined that the facility is on an outcrop of the Austin Group.

The Austin Group consists of weathered and unweathered limestone materials. This geological formation is an additional barrier to the protective liner that is currently used by the Hillside Landfill in accordance with state and federal regulations.

Groundwater monitoring wells are installed in order to monitor groundwater conditions. Groundwater monitoring wells are sampled and inspected on a semi-annual basis and analyzed by an independent laboratory. The reports are submitted to TCEQ for review and approval by third-party independent.
