Community Involvement

At the Hillside Landfill, we are committed to being a good neighbor and supporting community organizations in order to help make our community cleaner, safer and stronger. Waste Management has operated the Hillside Landfill, which serves Grayson County and surrounding communities, since 1986.

Neighbor Relations

We strive to have an open-door policy and to listen to our neighbors. We have made operational decisions based on the input from our neighbors, such as purchasing new technology to reduce the noise of back-up alarms associated with heavy equipment. This is just one example of how we try to be responsive to neighbor concerns.

We also meet with neighbors on a regular basis. We will provide tours to individuals and groups, upon request.

Community Contributions

ButterflyOur business, by its very nature, centers on protecting the environment and our natural resources. At the national level, we are a corporate sponsor of Keep America Beautiful, America Recycles Day, Wildlife Habitat Council, Points of Light Foundation, U.S. Conference of Mayors, and the National Association of Neighborhoods.

In Texas, we serve on the board of Keep Texas Beautiful and participate in numerous events across the state.

Waste Management has an employee committee that determines charitable contributions for the North Texas region on a monthly basis. If your group would like to submit a charitable request, please e-mail it to the hillsidelandfill@wm.com with your Tax ID number, date of event, list of Board Members for your organization, and donation amount or services requested.

Environmental Education

Facility Tours (All Ages)

Teachers and students are welcome to arrange tours of the Hillside Landfill to learn about the many facets of managing the waste produced in our area. To find out more about the facility tour or to schedule a date to visit, contact the Hillside office.

Waste Management also has educational programs available for use in schools. Contact the Hillside office for a copy of the following programs.

"EarthSavers - It's in Our Hands" (Grades 3-9)

Waste Management has produced exciting, useful and educational materials that can be used for school tours, classroom visits, and Earth Day events. The student activity booklet includes environmental information, family activities, and a chart to enter the conservation activities they have completed. The Teacher Activity Guide can be used by teachers or parents to stimulate good environmental awareness and citizenship.

"The Story of Garbage" (Grades 5-9)

This video produced and distributed through Waste Management is recommended for use in classrooms from Grades 5 through 9. It discusses at length the creation of waste in our society today, and what is being done to manage it. Whether recycled, placed in landfills, burned in waste-to-energy facilities, or dealt with in a variety of other processes, this program identifies the many sources of garbage, as well as the safest and most efficient methods of disposing of it.

Curriculum units applicable to the video program include Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science and Earth/Space Science.
